Dominic Thiem reveals glimpses of after-farewell plans

Dominic Thiem has decided to give his farewell to tennis by the end of 2024. News that has shocked fans of the 30-year-old who has decided to retire due to the exhausting and unsolvable physical problems that have affected his career since the victory at the 2020 US Open. In an interview with Tennis Sweet Spot, Thiem revealed his farewell plans, sharing his emotions and feelings about him.

"I trained hard for a few weeks, then wrist problems arrived, it was clear that I had to make that decision. When you think about retirement it never seems easy but now it just feels relieved and I believe that in these last tournaments I will be able to play above all while having fun. Every athlete deserves to once again enjoy the sport they have chosen. About a future in tennis, I can say I have several things in mind but I have to evaluate what to do. I still play tennis full time, I train twice a day so I don't have time for other things. I will continue to play tennis but I want to do new things. After all, tennis is what I do best and I will never do anything better than tennis in my life again," he told.

"I think of tennis players like the Fab Four or even athletes like Gael Monfils, they are something exceptional. I don't think it's normal and in the future we will see fewer and fewer athletes between 36 and 37 years old still competing and winning. I think 20 years ago it was It's normal to stop at my age, now let's say I'm considered young to retire. I've had a very demanding and intense career, I feel like it's the right time to stop. After the injury I never felt like I did before and especially in some shots it was practically impossible to recover. Honestly, I don't feel like a thirty-year-old, tennis-wise I feel much older," he analyzed.

The decision of the Roland Garros organizers not to grant him a wildcard caused an uproar but Dominic still had a wonderful send-off after his elimination during the tournament qualifiers. 2024 should see the farewell of several champions who, for one reason or another, have decided to definitively abandon the Tour. One of the most surprising retirements is certainly that of the Austrian tennis player
