Present this week at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Holger Rune talked in an interview with QuindiciZero about the pressure for his enormous talent and for that step that, unlike Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, he has not yet reached. After a year below expectations, the young Dane has changed coach for the umpteenth time, returning to Lars Christensen, after Patrick Mouratoglou, Boris Becker, Severin Luhti, Patrick Mouratoglou again, Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh Rezayeh and Kenneth Carlsen.

On the constant change of coach, the Dane said: "I have learned a lot from all the coaches. After working with the same coach for 15 years, I think it was important for me to try something different and get inspired by others to then figure out what was best for my game and my career. If I hadn't done it at that time, I would have definitely needed to do it at another time. Now I have tried different approaches and all of them have been inspiring: either they work or they don't work. We all try to become the best tennis player we can be and we know when we are fulfilling our potential or not. Now I know much better what I need and what works for me."

The young Dane then talked about how he handles the pressure of expectations, analyzing: "Honestly, I deserved to be in the top 7 or 8 based on the results I achieved between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. But reaching the 4th place in the rankings was not the result of my hard work, but a gift due to the results of the other players above me who did not defend their points from the previous year.

At the time I was not ready, my game was not top 4 and my mentality was not. Now I feel I have much more experience and this part is important because you have to adapt in the right way to stay at that level. Some do it faster than others, I feel comfortable in all aspects of the game now. This makes the mental aspect less demanding and generates energy to develop my game again. So now I feel good in everything."

The 21-year-old concluded by talking about his rivalry with Jannik Sinner, admitting: "I like playing against Sinner, they are always high-level matches. He is very professional in everything he does. Of course I like it more when I win, like in Munich last year. Matches like that can be hard-fought, but it's still fun to play them. As for Italy, I like it a lot, as I like the Italians. They have a lot of passion, which is perhaps a bit lacking in Scandinavia. I have a lot of passion when I play and I think that's why I like Italy so much, the fans transmit the energy that we all like."

As mentioned, considering his impact on the major circuit and the results he achieved early in the world of the bigs, much more was expected from Rune this season. The Danish tennis player definitely disappointed expectations and failed to make the definitive leap in quality. For a personality with strong ambitions, it was probably not easy to see those described as his two biggest rivals - Sinner and Alcaraz - dominate 2024 in every way.

Both the Italian and the Spaniard have won two Slams and shown that they have found an important balance both on and off the court. A balance that Rune is struggling to achieve even when building a solid team. As mentioned, Rune announced that he will once again rely on the historic coach Christensen

"I am happy to work with Lars again. We have known each other for so many years and have developed our tennis language together. During the past month, I have trained a couple of times with Lars when I was in Denmark and, among other things, he had a really positive effect on my serve," told Rune to sport.tv2.dk.
