Spanish star has no plans for post-retirement, wants 'to do nothing'

Garbiñe Muguruza has revealed that she has no grand plans after announcing her retirement from tennis at the age of 30.
The former world No 1 said she ‘just wants to do nothing’ following a 12-year career, which saw her capture 15 titles, including two Grand Slams.
Muguruza claimed her two Grand Slam victories in championship matches against the Williams sisters. She won her maiden Major at Roland Garros in 2016, besting Serena to claim the French Open title. Just over a year later Muguruza defeated Venus Williams to win Wimbledon.
She spent four weeks as world No 1 later in 2017 holding the rankings crown between 11 September and 8 October.
At the time of the announcement of her retirement, Muguruza had not competed in almost a year, and it was unclear if she would return to the court. She competed in four events in 2023 and lost four in the first round, causing her to take some time off from the sport. On Saturday, 20 April, Muguruza declared her retirement from professional tennis and disclosed that she had no definite plan for the future.
Muguruza seemed to take a shot at the perception that tennis players need to plunge into some great project straight after hanging up their rackets.
“People expect a great answer from me, I'm leaving tennis because I'm going to do this or that, I'm going to go into business, I'm going to develop a cookie – whatever it is,” Muguruza said.
“No. I'm leaving tennis because I'm looking forward to being with my loved ones, making a trip without my tennis racquets, probably building a family, getting a dog. I just want to do nothing.”
Muguruza says she is going to take the advice of her father who has told her not to forget to live life and that she doesn’t have to be the queen of Spain.
“No. I'm leaving tennis because I'm looking forward to being with my loved ones, making a trip without my tennis racckets, probably building a family, getting a dog. I just want to do nothing,” she went on.
"It's like bad nowadays to say something like that. It feels like always I have to say I want to be a businesswoman, I'm going to be a role model.
"My father always says to me, 'Garbine, don't forget to live life. You don't have to be the queen of Spain – relax'.”
“I felt very lucky to play tennis.
“It's a popular sport and we have better sponsors, tournaments, more prize money. I've trained around many other athletes from different sports and I saw how hard it was for them. They didn't have the same opportunities. I was like, 'man, I don't care if I'm criticised'. I'm so lucky."
