Coco Gauff finished the 2024 season on a high as she won the WTA Finals trophy, but she will be the first to admit that she needs to work on her serve ahead of the new campaign.

The American defeated Zheng Qinwen in the final of the season-ending tournament in Riyadh to lift her maiden WTA Finals trophy – and her second title of the year following her success at the Auckland Open.

But in between those trophy runs it was a struggle for Gauff when it came to her serve as she produced torrid service performances at various points, particularly at the US Open and the Wuhan Open.

Gauff was the only player to serve more than 400 double faults on the WTA Tour this year while three other players cracked the 300-mark barrier.

It is the third time in the last six years that a player has served more than 400 double faults with Aryna Sabalenka sending down 428 in 55 matches in 2022 and Jelena Ostapenko hitting 436 in 51 matches in 2019.

The 7 women with the most double faults on the 2024 WTA Tour:

7. Katie Boulter – 266

British No 1 Katie Boulter won the biggest title of her career when she lifted the WTA 500 San Diego Open trophy in March and three months later she won the Nottingham Open to take her overall tally to three.

Boulter, who also finished runner-up at the Hong Kong Open, served 266 double faults in 51 WTA Tour matches this year, which comes in at 5.2 per game, higher than last year’s average of 4.5.

6. Katerina Siniakova – 270

World No 46 Katerina Siniakova also played 51 top-level matches in 2024 so her average is roughly similar to that of Boulter.

The doubles legend, who has won five WTA singles titles with the last coming in October 2023, landed 61.6% of her first serves this season.

5. Ekaterina Alexandrova – 287

Former world No 15 Ekaterina Alexandrova finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Linz Open in February and her tally also came from 51 matches so she was at 5.6 per game.

Quite an improvement from 2023 when she served 357 double faults in 54 matches.

There is further good news for Alexandrova as her first serve percentage was at 71.4% while she also served 284 aces.

4. Paula Badosa – 310

Paula Badosa has struggled with injury for the best part of two years and her back problem has no doubt contributed to her serving woes.

Her first-serve percentage of 57.3 % was on the lowest side for the top players and her 310 double faults came in 55 matches while she served 265 aces.

3. Daria Kasatkina – 316

Daria Kasatkina’s 316 double faults in 63 matches came at just over five per match while her first-serve percentage of 66.5% was also impressive.

Last year she served 226 double faults in 66 matches.

The Russian, who finished the season at No 9 in the WTA Rankings, won titles at the Eastbourne International and Ningbo Open, and finished runner-up at the WTA 500 tournaments in Adelaide, Abu Dhabi, Charleston and Korea.

2. Marta Kostyuk – 370

Marta Kostyuk has increased her tally from 2023 by quite a bit as last year she served 260 at an average of 6.04 while this year's 370 double faults came in 54 matches at an average of 6.85 per match.

The 22-year-old reached finals at San Diego and Stuttgart, but finished runner-up to Boulter and Elena Rybakina respectively.

1. Coco Guaff – 430

Coco Gauff is by far and away the double-fault leader on the WTA Tour this year and her total of 430 came in 71 matches at an average of 6.0 per match.

It was a drastic increase from 2023 as she served 219 double faults in 66 matches and landed 60.5% of her first serves.

Her lowest points came against Emma Navarro during her fourth-round last at the US Open when she served 19 double faults and a few months later she served 21 – a record for the 2024 WTA Tour season – against Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final of the Wuhan Open.

Although she only played four matches at the US Open, she topped the charts with 38 double faults.

But there was good news at the WTA Finals as she served “only” 23 double faults during her five matches.
