WTA Rankings: The top five players over 30, ft. Petra Kvitova

There are currently no players older than 29 in the top 10 of the WTA Rankings, but there are 18 players aged 30 or above in the top 100.

The last time a female player won a Grand Slam singles title after their 30th birthday was when Angelique Kerber defeated Serena Williams to win the 2018 Wimbledon Championships.

Here, we count down the top five players aged 30 or over according to their WTA Ranking.

5. Sorana Cirstea

Sorana Cirstea is the fourth oldest player in the top 50 of the WTA Rankings, having turned 33 in April. She is currently ranked 26th in the world, just five places below the peak position of 21 she reached over a decade ago in August 2013.

The Romanian achieved the joint-best Grand Slam result of her career at the 2023 US Open last month, where she progressed to the quarter-finals and lost to Karolina Muchova. Cirstea holds a 24-21 record at tour-level in 2023, having also made the quarter-finals and semi-finals at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters respectively.

4. Magda Linette

Magda Linette, who turned 31 in February, is the second-youngest player on this list. She is the current world No 23, having reached a career-high singles ranking of 19 earlier this year in March.

The Pole has had one of her best seasons on the WTA Tour, having started it by reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, where she was beaten by eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. That was her best ever result at a Major. Linette is 27-25 at tour-level in 2023 and also reached the sixth final of her career at the WTA 250 event in Guangzhou in September, losing to Wang Xiyu. She will compete at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai this week.

3. Victoria Azarenka

Having celebrated her 34th birthday in July, Victoria Azarenka is the second-oldest player in the top 50 of the WTA Rankings after Lesia Tsurenko. The two-time Australian Open champion is ranked 22nd in the world, having become world No 1 in January 2012.

The Belarusian has a 23-10 WTA Tour record in 2023 – a season she made a strong start to by reaching the last four of the Australian Open, where she was defeated by Elena Rybakina. Azarenka also made the last 16 of Wimbledon, and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara last month.

2. Caroline Garcia

Caroline Garcia, who turned 30 earlier this month, is the second-oldest player in the top 20 of the Rankings but the youngest player on this list. She currently sits 20th in the world, having been ranked as high as No 4 in September 2018.

While Garcia has not quite matched her superb 2022 campaign – which she ended by winning the WTA Finals – she holds a healthy 39-25 record in 2023. The Frenchwoman was a runner-up at WTA 250 events in Lyon and Monterrey and recently made the semi-finals and quarter-finals at WTA 1000 tournaments in Guadalajara and Beijing. Garcia will feature at the WTA Elite Trophy this week.

1. Petra Kvitova

Petra Kvitova is the oldest player in the top 20 of the WTA Rankings, having turned 33 in March. The two-time Wimbledon winner, who peaked at No 2 in the world in October 2011, is currently ranked 12th.

The Czech has an impressive 30-13 win/loss ratio after a strong 2023 season, with the highlight being her triumph at the WTA 1000 event in Miami in March. Kvitova defeated Elena Rybakina in the final and dropped just one set in her six matches at the tournament. She also won the grass-court WTA 500 event in Berlin in June without losing a set.
