Casper Ruud has hailed Carlos Alcaraz as a “fantastic man” at the Laver Cup, saying the Spaniard has a “talent rarely seen” within tennis.

Both Ruud and Alcaraz are in Laver Cup action this week for Team Europe, looking to win back the title after back-to-back losses to Team World in the men’s team competition.

The Laver Cup hold a fairly unique place in tennis, often putting rivals together in a quest to lift the title, and that is no exception for Ruud and Alcaraz – who have met four times on the ATP Tour.

Alcaraz has won all four of those clashes, their most famous encounter coming in the 2022 US Open final, which the Spaniard won in four sets to lift the first of his four Grand Slam titles.

However, it is clear that Ruud does not hold any grudges, with the world No 9 paying a warm tribute following his opening loss to Francisco Cerundolo at the competition.

“I can only say good things about Carlos,” said the Norwegian.

“I had the opportunity to spend time with him this week, he is a fantastic man. What he does is incredible, having a young guy like him is great news for tennis.

“He is capable of doing incredible things on the court, he has a talent rarely seen in this sport and I have a lot of admiration for him because what he does is spectacular.

“I hope he continues to improve and that he is able to beat him in the future, but I also hope that he continues to have a lot of success for many years to come.”

Alcaraz also tasted defeat on Day 1 of the event in Berlin, he and Alexander Zverev beaten in their doubles clash by American stars Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.

However, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion turned the tables on Shelton in their singles clash on Saturday afternoon, prevailing 6-4, 6-4 to level the competition at four points apiece.

Action on Saturday night will Team Europe’s Alexander Zverev – competing on home soil – take on Taylor Fritz, with the Team World star having won their Wimbledon and US Open clashes.

That will then be followed by a doubles clash featuring Ruud, who will partner Stefanos Tsitsipas as the duo look to defeat Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo.
